About this book

Reports from the Select Committee of the House of Lords on the operation and policy of the Navigation Laws: with minutes of evidence, appendices and index, 1847-48 by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Select Committee on Navigation Laws.; Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. Select Committee on the Navigation Laws is a book available to read on EtoBox.

First formulated in the reign of Richard II and codified by Cromwell's Navigation Act of 1651, Britain's navigation laws constituted an elaborate form of protectionism which, by the 1840s, was being severely questioned. Both Houses of Parliament appointed committees to reevaluate the laws, and the resulting reports are contained in this two-volume set. The reports and the evidence give a comprehensive picture of the laws and their effect on Britain's export trade. As a result of these inquiries, the navigation laws were repealed in 1849 and coastal shipping was opened to foreign ships in 1854. -- Publisher's catalogue
